COFFIN POINT, also known as Elliot Point

48 59.113N 123 45.234W    July 28th 2005

We decided to dive this area again after having passed over the top of the rock and spied some kind of submerged wreckage on the way to Page Point Inn for dinner one night.

Visibility from the surface appeared to be very good for this time of year so we headed out a couple of days later.

(We had dove Nares Rk years before and had not found anything of any interest good place to find canon balls however.)

Unfortunately visibility was not as good as it had been only that few days earlier so It took us a little while of searching back and forth to find the wreckage again.

Having finally spied it again after passing over it at least have a dozen times we tossed the anchor in. We only had about 30 feet of water below us and could see the object clearly. It appeared to be some kind of boiler of drum off something.

Entering the water we had a good look around what certainly seemed like a boiler perhaps off an old steam donkey. It is about 10 to 12ft tall and perhaps 6 or 8ft in diameter. Having seen enough we headed off into deeper water to see what else we might find of the wreckage or sea creatures. No more wreckage but lots of sea life.

Perch of all kinds , rock fish and the occasional green ling. Lots of Crab and smaller life including nudibranch in amongst the kelp in the shallows.

A few painted green lings along the rock ledges that run back and forth.

This was quite a nice dive shallow with lots to see, easy entry and exit.

You will want to watch out for boat traffic as the outside of the reef is a popular fishing spot and the inside is a shortcut into Ladysmith Harbour. Make sure you have a dive flag and ascend in the shallows of the point.

I do recall reading something somewhere about this wreckage can't find it just now if anyone knows what it is let me know.       Photos' to follow.         Peter
