A large drying reef on the west side
of Kuper Island in Stuart Channel.
This
is probably one of the most popular local dives out of Chemainus and
Crofton. It's easy to get to easy to anchor and you can easily for 2 or 3
dives in very different areas. I don't remember how many dives I have done
here (dozens at least) I do know I love coming back. Quite a large finger of rock sticks out
into Stuart channel at Augusta point. You can anchor in the shallows at
the end of the reef North or south and drop in over the edge of this reef. Its an
easy
dive but lots to see in that 40 to 50ft range as well as depth to 70 feet
at the south end. What's really cool here is a sandstone wall and a boulder
covered bottom. Lots of ling cod and rock fish here as well as a great
variety of Nudibranch including hooded on the kelp in the shallows (30fsw).
This site has two very different zones deep beyond 40 feet and shallow
30 feet and up. You will want to spend at least half your dive in the
shallow zone particularly at the north end. We almost always dive the west
side as it is the most interesting, there are however a few small holes and
drop offs on the south east side worth looking at if you have seen the rest.
A
very cool spot near this we call escape ridge, it's not really identified on
the chart but is a very cool knife edge ridge with a small pinnacle at one
end. It's down about 30 feet, 1000 feet off the main reef. The
pinnacle is very rich in Plumose Anemone, Nudibranch and Feather stars.
The knife ridge it's self does not have a lot of life on it however it
is a very cool swim along the top of this ridge looking down into the abyss
either side. You can follow the ridge down to over 120 feet in to the dark.
The ridge turns into a wall at the shallow end which then turns into the
pinnacle at about 30 feet. The pinnacle is a perhaps 500 feet across.
